Crossing Over Burnt Bridges - Milliam
In the midst of the night, there is a shrill cry and a few minutes later, there is movement in and around the building that Mr and Mrs Smith live in.The moments after are tense, followed by painful shouts and then dead silence. The village is calm and there are no lights except from this mansion which stands tall as a landmark. At that moment everybody in the village woke up. People gathered in small groups discussing what could be the problem at Smiths. Everyone had different ideas. Some thought it was thieves, others a fire accident and worse still some thought that death had stuck the family.
Well, we all decided to go and find out what was really happening. We half walked and half run to the premises. On getting there we found the shock of our lifetimes.Mrs Smith was holding a newborn baby.It was barely seven months after her conception.Nobody really excepted this little bundle of joy.I stood there watching shocked villagers turning to joy.Four ululations were said by women which meant a baby girl was brought to the world. For a long, people had mocked her for not being able to conceive. There were rumours that Mr Smith was bound to marry a second wife.Whenever she went out to the market women would always gather and start calling her barren. Therefore this was the greatest breakthrough of her life. You can see the excitement on her face after eight years of marriage with a kid.Mr Smith is happy beyond words. News spread like wildfire and soon the house is filled with villagers with their gifts. The baby is named Komon.
Komon the little girl grew so fast, with love from both her parents and villagers all the same. She was so hard working and kind despite coming from a well of family and the richest at the Village for that matter. She would interact so well with other children at the village. She always went to fetch firewood and water despite her parents' numerous attempts to stop her. Whenever there was a community function, she always sneaked out of their home to attend it
It got to a point when her parents got tired of trying to stop her and even started supporting her. This earned her love and compassion from the villagers. She could always make a point of helping the nanny with the work at home. She would Clean utensils, mop the house and even help in preparing meals. One could definitely see she was destined for greatness.
Weeks turns to months, months turn to years and soon enough little Komon is joining school.

At school her performance is also so good that teachers use her as role model to other students. Starting from grades, cleaniliness and displine Komon had it all. She would always take awards after awards home but this never made her proud. Some students started to feel jealous of her and plotted on how to bring her down. She could find her books soiled and others torn. Sometimes her assignments went missing. This really pissed her off and decided to take revenge.
She tracked down one of her tormentors and went on to give her a beating of her lifetime. She was So badly beaten that she had to get admitted to a hospital. Komon was given a two weeks suspension and ordered to seek counselling on her anger issues. Two weeks was too long for her that she decided to sneak back to school and attend classes which prompted to another suspension. This was a whole month wasted and from then she decided to manage her anger and impatience issues.
After a serious counselling and parental talk,Komon promised to be a good girl and true to her words she did. Her parents were impressed and given that she was the only child she is treated like a princess. She was always taken for vacations to different parts of the country. She had the best things a child would dream off since her parents were rich. On one occasion, she is taken to Disneyland for her birthday. All this didn't make her look down on her less privileged friends.
This went on and it was time to sit for the national exams (K. C. P. E) She did as expected. She passed with flying colors. Her parents decided to send her to Zanzibar for a vacation before joining form one. When she was say, her parents thought it a good idea to take her to one of the most prestigious schools in town. This was due to the fact that wanted herto interact with people outside the village and realize what she wanted to do with her life. They set a day to do so and it was after Komon had got back home. Since there was a month left before the journey to school,Komon enrolled in a girls class for counselling to help her overcome challenges in high school.
On a Tuesday morning,Komon and her parents left their homestead . They dropped Komon at the institution and off they went to town to pick the admission letter.
Could they have known that that was the last day to see their daughter, they would just have remained home.
They were driving casually along the busy wahak road. Mrs Smith was busy munching her chocolate muffins that she had bought earlier from a supermarket while Mr Smith was busy driving. They were so excited as they talked about the recent happenings in their country. Starting from politics, sports, weather and mostly about their daughter who had turned to be a very fine young lady. Mr Smith made a slight mistake. He turned to give his wife a reassuring smile that their daughter was a winner and in that instant, it was a mistake that could claim their lives. They were involved in a very greasy road accident where their car collided with an oncoming mchanga lorry.Mr Smith died on spot and Mrs Smith couldn't make it to the hospital.
